Lorena ParrishThe Reverend Lorena M. Parrish, Ph.D. a Worldwide Branding member and Adjunct Professor at the Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, will be on hand to support the Women of Color in Ministry (WOCIM) project, which seeks to end one of the final frontiers of American prejudice—gender discrimination in the Christian Church and in its attendant seminaries, divinity schools, and service organizations, especially as it relates to women of color.

The annual event will be taking place on Friday, October 17th, and Saturday, October 18th, 2014, in New York City at Convent Avenue Baptist Church. The event details are as follows:

Convent Avenue Baptist Church
420 W. 145th Street
New York, NY 10031

Cost for both days – $25.00
The only way to register for tickets is online!
Reserve your spot at http://womenofcolorinministry.org by October 13th, 2014.

Dr. Parrish, a former successful publishing executive, left the field of publishing as a result of what she says was a calling to become a pastor.  She attended Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York while she continued working as a publishing executive. Although she loved her work in publishing, her theological studies as well as her work in the areas of advocacy and social justice took over her life. The event being held on October 17th will give those in attendance an opportunity to get the answers they are seeking that pertain to ministry, and the chance to visit with seminary representatives and to learn how to get a job in ministry, as well.

Now holding 15 years of progressively successful experience, Dr. Parrish, who has been lauded as a pastor, preacher and activist scholar, strives to develop people, churches and institutions for the wellness and promotion of justice and peace. She has become a movement builder, visionary pastor and organizational leader with experience serving as head of nonprofit initiatives, a pastor in both urban and rural settings, and a theologian and adjunct professor. Skilled in ecclesial, organizational and human growth and development, Dr. Parrish is an excellent strategic planner, organizer, mediator and collaborator who encourages and nurtures the leadership qualities in others. Her experience and expertise includes overseeing the fiscal, operational, organizational and programmatic aspects of churches and nonprofits, as well as serving as mediator and counselor to groups and individuals.

Ordained with American Baptist Churches-USA, Dr. Parrish holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from New York University (cum laude), a Master of Social Work from Columbia University (summa cum laude), and a Master of Philosophy, Master of Divinity, and Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Union Theological Seminary. She attributes her successful career to the grace of God and having faith, as well as her tenacity and the support of family.

Special Olympics Swim Coach Phil Wetzler Shares his Triumphant Story with Worldwide Branding

Phil Wetzler is the Head Coach of the Baltimore City Special Olympics Swim Team for Special Olympics Maryland

Phil Wetzler, the Head Coach of the Baltimore City Special Olympics Swim Team for Special Olympics Maryland, coached world-record holder Andy Miyares during the Special Olympics World Games in China (2007). Miyares went on to swim in an exhibition with Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff.

Phil Wetzler, Head Coach of the Baltimore City Special Olympics Swim Team for Special Olympics Maryland, shared his fond recollections of working with a young, talented aquatic expert and athlete through the organization last month. Mr. Wetzler was named a Professional of the Year in Athletic Coaching in 2012, and he has made a name for himself as a driven and compassionate individual who goes above and beyond to help others within his community.

For nearly a decade, Mr. Wetzler has been serving as the head coach of the SOBC division of Special Olympics Maryland, and in his role, he has helped the team to thrive tremendously. He coached the U.S.A. swim team for the 2011 games in Greece and took 40 athletes, from ages 16 to 30. The athletes competed in 18 different sporting events. He also coached the Special Olympics swim team in China in 2007 and in 2008 was named Baltimore City’s Special Olympics Volunteer of the Year.

Mr. Wetzler recently recalled one of the most memorable moments of his career on SpecialOlympics.org:

“In 2008, as head coach of the Baltimore City Special Olympics Maryland swim team, I brought to Baltimore a talented swimmer with Down syndrome, who owned, at that time, over 15 world records for ‘special needs’ athletes. He was there to swim an exhibition with world and Olympic champions Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff. The athlete is Andy Miyares, who I coached during the Special Olympics World Games in China in 2007. [This] has been held event during one of our swim practices, at Meadowbrook, ‘our swim home,’ for the past nine years. The crowd, our swim team of 48 athletes, and Michael, Katie, and their coach, Bob Bowman, were ecstatic, as Andy Miyares performed, so perfectly, with Michael and Katie. This was, truly, one of the most gratifying experiences of my life, seeing the joy and satisfaction on everyone’s face, and understanding just how meaningful it was and continues to be, in the ongoing competitive, wholesome life of Andy Miyares and his entire family. Andy will never forget that day, nor will I.”

Phil Wetzler

Mr. Wetzler began volunteering as a coach nearly a decade ago, working with six athletes in 2004, and now there are almost 70 athletes at the facility. He was also recently named one of two swim coaches in the U.S. to teach and coach “special needs” swimmers, as part of the Michael Phelps IM Program, a global, inspirational instruction program focusing on improving abilities and assuring good health practices.
